I am having trouble with the qualification process... I am certified for everything in my state EXCEPT for vision and hearing (I'm special ed)...so I teach moderate to severe students currently and have a great deal of experience with behavior and ASD. DoDEA only qualifed me for mild learning impairment and on my quals summary they stated that I'm not state endorsed in other areas...which I am. I understand that I may be missing some of the course work in those areas, but I AM currently endorsed by my state. Is there anything I can do?

happyteacher Did you ever get any resolution with this? It is all so funny how the wording works. When I first applied they found me eligible for LIMM and Severe and Profound, but NOT Moderate/Severe. That made no sense to me - I had the coursework for severe, but not moderate/severe? They finally qualified me for moderate/severe when I sent in a course descrip...See More

SpedTeacher74 I did email them my course descriptions and my state endorsement categories. My state (Arkansas) has me endorsed for everything except hearing and vision, so I am mild/moderate/severe/behavior/autism etc. I sent an email with questions, but I haven't heard back yet. I currently teach self-contained 4th-8th grade...but I have taught high school.

happyteacher If it is on your teaching license (for instance mine says PreK-12 Elementary Ed, K-12 Learning Disabilities, K-12 Emotional Disabilities and K-12 Intellectual Disabilities) than it should count (assuming you have the coursework). My state has me certified for PreK and kindergarten, but DoDEA required two additional courses. Maybe it was just the wo...See More

SpedTeacher74 My license says p-4 special education instructional specialist and 4-12 special education instructional specialist with the codes of 230 and 231. When you go to the ADE website and type in those codes, it gives you everything I'm qualified to teach. It lists 18 different categories I'm qualified to teach in Arkansas and that is what I sent in the e...See More

happyteacher Hmmmm that's a tricky one because it sounds like a blanket certification for all sped positions. I'm technically certified in my state to teach autism because I have LD and ED, so that means I'm qualified to have students with autism. But dodea doesn't count that because it's not on my license, even though my state lets me and I've been doing it fo...See More
