Hi everyone--Congrats to everyone who has been offered a position! I wish I had started the process a little earlier, but I am currently applying for teaching positions for the 2018-19 school year. I'm wondering if I should submit a cover letter--they seem to be pretty strict on the documents that they want and the application site says something about unwanted/unneeded documents may slow down the process. Everything that I know about submitting application says to submit a cover letter, so I'm wondering is those of you who were hired submitted a cover letter or not? Thanks so much!
Scholar Nope. Only the documents requested. Once an interview was scheduled, I did email my resume in the case they wanted to have a better picture than their print out gives. I think the "edge" is given with yrs experience and college level and if you have DoDEA experience (of course local hires, military spouses and veterans get preference too). There is...See More

haha I would agree that DoDEA is its own unique animal. You applying to a on online system essentially so a cover letter, separate resume' etc do not factor into the process, are not searchable by prospective principals. ESLTeach Thanks for this confirmation! One more question--is there generally a demand for ESL teachers within the DoDEA system? My qualifications have been verified (middle and high school English, reading intervention, and ESL). I taught middle school ELA for 7 years, middle school reading intervention and ESL for 2 years, and have been the ESL Director fo...See More

haha I would say if varies wildly from location to location and school to school. In the two schools I have been at, ESL has been combined with other certifications and/or shared between two schools on complex. I'm aware of several other schools where ESL is part-time and/or combined with other subjects (like ESL).

ESLTeach Thanks. It's not all that uncommon for those conditions to exist in public school stateside, so that doesn't surprise me. My last position before becoming a director was split ESL and reading intervention. I'm starting to look into what I need for a special ed certification in order to make myself more marketable!
