Hello all! I have been reading all the "last minute"-ness of transfers overseas and have a question. I am a divorced mom to a teenager who would accompany me if I were to get hired. I would need to also get her registered into the high school wherever we would be assigned. Does anyone hired recently also have non-military dependents and can give some insights to how those challenges pan out? I wouldn't have anyone 'back in the states' that would be able to keep things running for me if I were needed to report ASAP and needed to just hop on a plane. Just a curiosity. I'm excited about potential of applying and working (as is my daughter) but wondering if I would be biting off more than I could chew...

Thanks in advance for any insights. You all have been so helpful and I've learned so much just from reading all the posts.

Jennifer P thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. I am not typically a "worrier", rather more of a "planner" with flexibility to change with the unexpected. I would just like things for my daughter to be a smooth transition if the planets align and I get an offer next year or the following. I could do the whole thing on my own without skipping a beat...See More

haha If it makes you feel any better, having to fly out before a pack out is relatively rare with DoDEA. Also, counselors and staff work very hard to make sure that incoming students will be on track for graduation. We've even had incoming seniors from states with very different graduation requirements and have been able to make sure that they graduate ...See More

DoDeaNewbie If your daughter has the opportunity to get her driver's license stateside, do it. I don't know about other countries, but Europe only issues European licenses in conjunction with a valid stateside license and only if you're 18. Some of our local teenagers have to wait until after they graduate and on their way to college to get a drivers license. ...See More

HelpOthers The drivers license for your teen is good advice. In my local area, they can take a AAA approved driving class and receive a certificate showing they passed the test. This gives them a SoFA license they can use while here. I have not been told to have her carry the certificate with her, but she is not 18 yet, so can only drive on base anyway.

Jennifer P great advice on the license...she will be old enough to get a permit next fall, so if I don't get hired first year applying (which seems typical) she may have that taken care of before we would leave hopefully

and @haha, yes, it actually does make me feel better. I guess with just seeing mainly the experiences on this site it's sometimes h...See More
