I'm just wondering if substitutes are scarce everywhere or if our school is experiencing some unique struggles. We are splitting classes, having 5 teachers cover for 1 teacher (basically a rotating door of subs), going without subs for kindergarten aids, specialists, and other positions because we just don't have the people. We just had a new sub start and she stated it took THIRTEEN months to start which is discouraging because it seems like there isn't going to be a solution to this problem. So many of the people that applied no longer want the position by the time they are finally contacted which seems like a waste of human resources as well. I guess I'm just wondering if this is an agency problem or a local one and if anyone has suggestions for solutions.
haha It's definitely an agency wide problem, which the union keeps raising with management. They admit it's a problem although they contend that it's being addressed and is no longer a crisis. It does seem to vary widely in it's intensity from location to location.

Icanread I've worked in a handful of districts. Every single one of them has had problems with getting enough subs. It's not a problem specific to Dodea, unfortunately.
