I have a personal checking account (local stateside/credit union) and a USAA account, Visa, and MasterCard. Question...I saw that US money (and credit cards?) are not very useful many places in Okinawa. If I heard, correctly, what is the best way for me to pay my rent/deposit/renters fee when I first arrive? Should I bring a cashier's check from my savings account and immediately open a local (in Okinawa on a military base/post) bank account? I don't really see any other way to find a place if I have understood things correctly. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Donna J Icanread I will be at RyukyuMS, Kadena MS and Bechtel ES (I think).

I have a Navy Credit Union nearby. Should I go ahead and open an account before I leave? Would it simplify anything? What is GI Bill Pay?

I arrive March 2. Yelp. Getting close!

haha If you verify that it is the same Navy Federal with branches where you will be then it might be helpful. We have one check direct deposited into our old German base credit union and one direct deposited into Navy Federal Credit Union so my impression is that you have a lot of choice about where you can have money deposited.

LQA is generall...See More

HelpOthers I know this is a late response. I use USAA in japan. I just increased the amount I could draw from the ATM and pulled what I needed to pay the deposit and to pay the cash for the car. The ATM on base does not charge a fee. The fees charged by 7-11 have been reimbursed by USAA just like using an ATM in the USA. I use GI bill-pay now for monthly rent...See More
