Wow, that was exciting. I was sitting at my computer and I heard a crackling noise. It sounded like a piece of cellophane had gotten stuck on a fan. I looked at the fan and nothing was there. Then I realized it was coming from my G5. I stood up and looked over my monitor, and saw flames at the bottom of my G5 where the power supply unit is. They were contained within the housing but I could see it through the little holes. I blew out the flames and unplugged everything from the unit.

It was 5 months out of the Applecare warranty. So I had to pony up $300 to get it repaired, since there is no other known issue. It's a good thing I was working on it at the time. Imagine if it had been left on while everyone was sleeping. The Apple repairman said it's working fine now but of course they won't let me have the defective part back. I told them since I paid for it out of my own pocket, then I should get it back but the fine print in the repair contract says the part has to go back to...See More
Neal Had it been "acting strange" long before the fire e.g. fan noise or suddenly stopping, starting, problems booting or freezing?

Jean Bullock Hi,Neal! No it wasn't a coolant leak and it wasn't in the group of G5 that was included in the recall.

However, occasionally the G5 would make a noise like it was spinning a drive and the fans would kick in like crazy. It only happened once in a while but it did that from the very beginning. My hard drive failed within the first year of u...See More
