I truly want to be honest with everyone. If you go for this degree it will either take 3 years to get a job, or never. When I graduated in 06' in New York, there were a few openings that got 800 resumes each. I know this for a fact from speaking to principals. By 2009, those few openings were totally gone. NYC froze their budget and eliminated most guidance counselors.

In 08/09 I got certified in New Jersey. My pool opened up dramatically, I started getting some interviews and administrators were only getting 150-250 resumes for 1 job. Well, I did get a job in New Jersey as a counselor for 09/10. However, now all the budgets are being reduced GREATLY in New Jersey. Most middle and elementary school counselors are getting fired to save money. I believe NJ will now become like NY.

My advice: Become a school psychologist. They are always mandated because of special education laws and you can do private practice on the side.

Kathy Thanks for being honest about NEW YORK and NEW JERSEY jobs. However if anyone is interested in positions in northern VA, there are currently 7 school counselor position openings in my county posted, and at least one more to post in the next few weeks. Of course I have no idea how many applicants they will get for these jobs.
