Since I was hired to teach at my high school, we have had one tradegy after another. My 1st semester saw 3 suicides, I lost a student to cancer my 2nd semester, I lost a student in a fire this semester and most recently a student was a victim of violence. There is so much more that goes on but our high school enrollment hovers around 3900 students so I am not always affected. My question is: How do you respond to these incidents? I want to send something to my student who recently got hurt, a card, flowers??? I did not know any of the suicides being so new but for the ones affecting me personally, I did not attend services for my cancer student and felt horribly guilty but did for the young man lost in the fire and felt very out of place.

Are there any resources to help teachers out? I can't help it, I am just a person who gets emotionally involved with my students and my heart just aches for my kids.

Sara There's nothing to apologize for - of course you should care about these students - they're members of your school community whether you know them or not. But yes it's also awkward to be at a service for someone you didn't know though in my experience people are usually grateful for your presence. No one likes to be alone at a funeral.

Leah I think a personal note is always appreciated when you knew the student. As well as the usual comments in a sympathy note, you might want to say something positive about him/her.
