Hello all. I posted earlier about my interest in counseling. I am currently teaching and would really love to make the switch. I would do it in a heartbeat if I wasn't worried about affording this degree.

I have an undergrad degree in fine arts and I am certified to teach. I am still paying loans back on my certification and am recently married. My husband and I bought a house last year. With both of us making a decent salary, it is still difficult some months to get our mortgage and bills paid.

I just simply dont know if its possible for me to go back to school right now. Especially when counseling requires an internship and I will have to stop working. How can I accomplish my goals of becoming a counselor when I cant afford the education right now? What is your story, and how did you make it work?? Looking for lots of inspiration............
lacey loans, lots of 'em. i'm going to use "public service loan forgiveness" which will allow me to make payments for 10 years based on my income and all that is left after 10 years will be forgiven. check it out: [link removed]

Are School Counselors eligible for this under the phrase that says "other school-based services" in the "Employment" section? I don't know why, but I was under the impression that we weren't eligible. Just be care...See More

Jamie I was going to do the public service loan forgiveness but you can only do it if you pay under the Income contingent program...with that my loan payment would be well over $600 a month, and would be paid off in 8 years, so in the end I wouldn't actually get any of it "forgiven". the reason my payments are so high is because it's based on my joint in...See More

lacey that's why i plan to continue to file single when i get married. it's based on what you file with the IRS, so if you file single the income contigent plan doesn't cost as much (at least not what they pay school counselors here in SC...).
