I attended a math in service and we were shown a procedure for teaching long division. It was called Wide Division. Has anyone used this method?

Glenda 4TN The presenter was Carolyn Belson. She was brought in by my district to present to select teachers from each school in the district.

4th I tried the method based on what you explained. It works very well. It may be easier to get kids to remember the steps. They have a hard time bringing a number down, then remembering what to do next. It actually reminds me of the way our fifth grade teacher, who is in her early 60's, says she learned how to divide

Glenda 4 TN Thanks for the feedback. Glad you were able to follow my directions.

I think if I use the flats, rods, and units for place value and have the students do a lot of "trading" it will make even more sense to the students. I discussed this with my team on Monday, they were concerned the parents would complain and not be able to help their chi...See More

Bea in Alberta We call it SHORT division. Google it.

we use partial quotients method. I haven't heard of wide division. It sounds interesting. My kids love partial quotients.
