I have a special needs student, a big old boy with a heart of gold. When we play recorders he cheerfully plays along - on one note. I also have the best singing 5th grade I have ever had and have decided to have the whole class sing for their graduation rather than just the choir. But this sweet boy, well at the risk of sounding insensitive, he sounds like Rocky bellowing "Adrienne" after his big fight. He can easily drown out all around him. He has no volume control, or maybe doesn't understand "sing softer please." To their credit, the kids have never made fun of him or even complained, and I certainly don't want to be the one to call attention to him, but he will really destroy our song. I have never singled him out to say sing softer, because I don't want to hurt him, plus I'm not sure he can understand. What would you do? These kids have beautiful voices and I want to do a two part Rollo Dillworth song with them, but he what can I do with him?
Martha I would try to coach him on blending. If it's for graduation you have some time right?

But it sounds like the other students do not mind. Also, it is his graduation as well and deserves to participate. In my experience with special needs kids in my choir, I have never had more smiling faces a...See More

absolutely expect him to learn and improve If a student is placed in our classes, we have to assume there is a presumption that they are capable of learning something while there. If they are not capable of learning anything, they are misplaced and should be in a more appropriate placement.

The difference between screaming and singing is a pretty basic expectation. So, ask for it, ...See More

lis I agree with the other responses...but if it seems
impossible, would it be too obvious for him to play a soft
instrument at certain places in the song...such as a
finger cymbal or triangle?
