My state published new standards last year right as I was switching schools. My students had not been taught the standards - ever. I got permission from my principal last year to continue using the old standards and then transition to the new one this year.

The new standards are ridiculously hard. For example, they want 1st grade students performing music from traditional written notation. They want 3rd grade students to be able to articulate the music concepts they hear in a piece of music (dynamics, tempo, mood) and how the composer uses them to convey expressive intent in written form.

I am attempting to find a middle ground between meeting the standards and not pushing the kids beyond what they are capable of. So I am pushing the kids hard but within what they are capable of in my opinion. (Keep in mind, I'm not a newbie. I've been teaching very successful music programs for 10 years).

Now I have a group of very upset 3rd grade parents because their litt...See More
Michele I very much understand your frustration. The new standards are more rigorous. However, you do not have to meet every standard. At this point, the standards can be a goal to work towards. As your younger ones grow each year, they will be able to get closer and closer to mastering them. There is no way that my 5th graders could achieve everything the...See More

Just keep reviewing what you did last year and lay the groundwork for completing standards at a later time. I also don't worry about mastering every standard, some of them I hit it a few times ...See More

Also, don't overthink this... First graders "reading from notation" can mean being able to do ta and titi (doo doo de...whatever) rhythms, or So Mi songs. Not that they are reading full symphonies!

Third graders being able to describe music can mean that they are able to label slow and fast songs, loud and soft songs, etc. Give them a paragraph "form&quo...See More

Anne You have to meet them where they're at! If they can't do
the 3rd grade things yet, you need to teach them all the
things they need to do to get to that level. If that means
starting with the 1st grade standards, start there!

When I start at a new school, I always give an assessment
so that I know what they know and don't. That...See More
