RACE EXPERT-AUTHOR APPEARS AT TEACHERS.NET
SAN DIEGO, CA -- Teachers.Net, the premier Internet resource for educators world-wide, presents author Beverly Daniel Tatum live November 10 in the Teachers.Net Confetence Room (http://teachers.net/conference ). Ms. Tatum will chat live and discuss her book, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race (Basic Books, 1997).
In "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together?" Tatum applies her expertise on race to argue that straight talk about racial identity is essential to the nation. She uses real-life examples and the latest research, giving readers a new tool or lens for understanding race as a developmental factor experienced by everyone.
Dr. Tatum, Dean of Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts was one of three authors to appear with President Clinton at a national town meeting on race, and she has appeared in dozens of media outlets around the country. She has toured extensively, leading workshops on racial identity development and its impact in the classroom, and has published numerous works on race and educational issues. A clinical psychologist and a professor of psychology and education who maintains a consulting practice, Tatum earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University in psychology and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Bevely Tatum joins an impressive line-up of experts from the field of education who have appeared online with Teachers.Net. The transcript of Tatum's session will join a collection of transcripts from recent guest appearances, including Dr. Howard Gardner, Dr. Samuel Meisels, Dr. Gerald Tirozzi and Dr. Pat Cunningham. In addition, http://teachers.net/archive of transcripts features representation from the world of children's literature and the community of authorities in the world of education. According to site Co-Director Bob Reap, "Teachers.Net is committed to providing our huge international community of educators the opportunity to rub elbows with the best and brightest from the world of education, research and literature. We do this not to benefit the authors, experts and 'gurus' whose names are household words in the homes of educators, but to enhance the professional development and expertise of teachers and school administrators who have an insatiable hunger for the information and inspiration these special guests provide."
