Teacher Tax Relief Act Leaves Many Teachers Behind
Many see it as too little for too fewSAN DIEGO, CA -- The cover article in the February 2003 Teachers.Net Gazette examines teacher spending and how the new Teacher Tax Relief Act will impact U.S. educators.
With teachers of grades kindergarten through eight spending over 1 billion dollars of their own money each year on classroom materials, relief from these out of pocket expenditures seems appropriate. The new Teacher Tax Relief Act, allowing a deduction of up to $250 when computing the adjusted gross income, purports to provide necessary assistance. The Teachers.Net Gazette article describes the reality--how much teachers really spend on what, and why, and how a large portion of the teaching community is ineligible for the benefit provided by the temporary new law.
Teachers describe the types of supplies and materials they feel compelled to buy, and how the new tax act will impact them, or not, in the cover article of the February Teachers.Net Gazette at http://teachers.net/gazette/FEB03/covera.html.
