Three weeks ago I got a call from a former coworker. She
teaches a primary autism class (K-1). She had fallen at
work and hurt her ankle/foot. She needed someone to sub
until she got an MRI and followup doctor appointment. She
was told it would be one week. Yesterday I finished up
week 3. She called after work and told me she finally had
gotten the MRI and had the follow up appointment. She has
2 torn ligaments in her foot/ankle. One is healing. The
other is still quite swollen. She will be off for at
least 2 more weeks. I told her I could help her out for
another couple of days, but had promised a friend to do a
1-3 week job at my old school. She asked if she could put
me in for the week. I told her to do that, but she may
need to modify if I get the call to start the other job.
I am hoping to at least work for her this week. If I can
get at least 3 more days in, I'll get a decent daily rate
raise (just under 1/3 of the regular rate) that will be
retroactive to the first day. Actually, I'd love to stay
in the position until she returns, but I did promise my
friend and I won't go back on that promise.
I also got a personal call from a principal at another
school wanting to hire me for a half time resource
special ed position on the recommendation of another
special ed teacher. I called back and thanked him for the
offer, but that I couldn't take the job due to the two
long term positions. My real reason was that I could not
imagine going back to writing IEPs, progress reports,
doing assessments, staying for staff meetings, etc. I
love subbing because I get to do what I love. I get to
teach.
