The issue of writing lesson plans
needs review. Although useful to
a lot of teachers, I don't write
them. I find them a waste of time.
Don't get me wrong. I do plan. And
I have evidence of planning. I plan
through my whiteboard, with each lesson
carefully paced and interactive. That
takes time.
I plan through assessment. I know which
students require more attention, grouping,
etc. That takes time.
And finally, I plan through research.
I read what other teachers do, best
practices, watch videos, etc. That takes
time.
But most importantly, I have a wealth of
knowledge at my fingertips after reading,
researching and creating interactive lessons.
I'm able to respond to my students in the
classroom. The best time of all.
I have lots of teachable moments. You can't
plan for those. You just have to be ready.
And at the heart of it all are Common Core
Standards. I address them every day.
So, why then do I have to create or read from
a script, i.e., a lesson plan?????!!!!! Am
I teaching my students, or simply preparing for
an admin to walk in and read my plans at their
leisure? I don't have time for that.
I get better than city average NYSS results every
year. And yes, I take PD very seriously. I want
to be even better at teaching.
But lesson plans won't make you a better teacher
if you use other methods for planning. There are
only 24 hours in a day and I'm sick and tired of
lesson plans getting such high and unnecessary
priority.
