Teachers are teaching to the test because
that is what the state wants. When your
career rests in the hands of test scores
the tests becomes the curriculum. It is
not just the inner city schools either.
My daughter who attends a rural school
had to complete 2 point responses every
night for homework last year. They read
non-fiction passages, not books, all
year. The goal is to dumb them down so
they can't think for themselves. State a
claim, find evidence from the text to
support your claim. There is no more
text to self thinking, background
knowledge, or making connections to the
text. As David Coleman says " No one
gives a s@$t what you think."
