If students begin to engage in group behavior and they are getting
out of control, I make the announcement that if they are going to
waste my time, I am going to waste theirs! I quit teaching, sit
down at my desk and set my timer for ten minutes during which time
I grade papers and tidy my desk. They quiet down, but I don't
resume teaching until my timer goes off. Just flat out tell them
that you are contracted to teach, not to be a patrol officer. If
they arene't willing to listen and cooperate, you can use your
time in other ways. I only do this if many are joining in. If
only one or two students are being disruptive, I ask the one who
is causing trouble to step out into the hall. Remember that even
when the whole class appears to be acting out, it is usually just
one or two ringleaders who are getting other off in the wrong
direction. If you call a teacher in from another room, you are
announcing to the students through your actions that you can't
cope. Next time they are out of control, just stand there in
front of the class and don't say a word. Stop teaching and just
stare at the trouble makers. Less is more. They will get the
idea. I don't know what age you teach, but set up a time out desk
in the front or the back of the room, and when someone is
disruptive, which they usually do for attention, send that one
student to a desk in the back of the room. Later on, be very
clear that they are not to come to your class and keep others from
    learning. Hope this helps.
