It's not illegal. Here are the issues; first your contract very likely
defines you as a "professional educator" and it does not dictate
a grade level, or subject is probably says that basically your
assignment is at the discretion of the district. Second, despite
how you feel or think, it is not your classroom and they are not
your students, they are the districts. They can assign you to a
classroom and a subject your qualified to teach and then fill it
with students that they assign.
While this would create or could create a compliance issue with
the district. It's the districts issue, not yours. Request notice of
the directive from your principal/administrator, and document
what your being directed to do, then send it by email to your
teacher associations legal department. this will create a paper
trail in case you are later audited or have a problem. Then teach
what you've been assigned to teach.
