HS football is a big deal in Texas, as you're probably
aware. I don't know if it's the same in La...
Honestly, unless you're a big deal in La as a football coach
with an impressive football resume that could turn heads in
Tx, you're not going to be a head coach in Texas right off
the bat. You may get an assistant position, but that will
depend on the school and situation. There are some schools
where people have been waiting many years to get a coaching
job.
This is very different from up north, where schools have to
beg their teachers to take a coaching job, just to fill the
slot. I knew a guy who was a middle school basketball coach
in Michigan and he didn't know anything about the sport.
Literally didn't know the rules (5 men on the court,
dribbling, etc) and had never played... They needed someone,
he was non-tenured, which matters up there, and they made him
do it. That wouldn't happen in TX, as far as I know.
Anyways, the history and PE teaching job is going to be
difficult. There are a lot of those types of teachers who
can't find jobs. It would be better if you wanted to be a
special ed or math teacher or spoke Spanish. Then, I would
feel confident you would get a job. There are a lot of
social studies and PE teachers, with coaching backgrounds,
who can't get a job. It is hard to say if you'll be able to
do it. No one could say for sure. There could be a district
where you fit nicely, they need a coach and a teacher with
your cert, they like you at the interview, and you slide
right in, but as of now, I would have to say that the odds
favor you having a difficult time finding a job.
