I have nothing against volunteering. I volunteer on my own chosen time with
organizations I support. That being said, our administration has decided that
all of the organizations in our large public high school will participate in a
group project on a weekend day. This means anyone who already volunteers
by sponsoring a group, will have an additional, mandatory, unpaid day where
we have to both find a means of contributing as well as find a way for
students to get to the locations without any help from the district. Most of the
kids in the group I sponsor don't drive. Most also work in family businesses
on the weekend. Just trying to get kids there for events related to the club is
difficult-I don't know how to lure them to volunteer for something like this.
This also gets to an issue of contracted time. I work beyond my scheduled
hours including taking kids to various competitions. I also have an aging
parent I care for on the weekends-getting them to the grocery store, picking
up prescriptions, etc. Is this legal for the school to require we participate
outside of contracted hours simply for the sake of getting some positive
publicity?
