There are three different types of contracts
probationary, term and continuing.
A probationary contract is for one year, and a teacher
may be employed under two more probationary
contracts for a total of three years (under some
circumstances a teacher can potentially offered a 4th
year on a probationary contract, but it's a terminal
contract, meaning that it ends and there is no
opportunity to renew or offer any other type of
contract). To non-renew a probationary contract all
the school board needs to do is provide appropriate
notice and claim the non-renewal "is in the best
interests of the district".
A term contract is for a set term of 1-5 years, many
districts use one year term contracts. To non-renew a
teacher with a term contract the district needs to
have some type of cause that's less than good cause
but not no cause, typically it's for violation of a policy.
A continuing contract is tenure in Texas, continuing
contracts are not "renewed", a district must have
good cause to terminate a continuing contract
(exception being financial exigency).
When you are working your internship year you will
have a probationary certificate and a probationary
contract. Your continued employment will be
determined just as any other probationary, first year
teacher. Teachers can complete certification, and not
be renewed. The school may also require that you
extend your internship, for another semester or year.
Most schools hire certification interns because they
want to shape a teacher build a solid employee from
the start.
