I am using SUTW with my 2nd graders and we focus on just one
thing at a time. We are working on just writing an informal
outline and then a topic sentence. I notice they do a lot
better when I model a lot, then we do it together a lot,
then I let them try it on their own, when I feel they get
it. For my highest readers and writers they get it pretty
quickly, the lower students will still need help so don't
get frustrated. In the reproducibles there are blank strips
you can copy on to green, yellow and red paper and cut into
strips for them to write their Topic sentence, star idea and
details on. That gives them a good visual and connects the
informal outline to their writing. For me that is the
hardest part. Getting them to understand that the outline is
their plan, then they write the story and/or sentences. The
informal outline mobile you find in the reproducibles is
also helpful in teaching the organization piece and color
coding. I hope this helps a little....I love Calkins too,
but I find that it doesn't provide them with the
organizational piece and learning to write complete
sentences that SUTW does. I would combine them both for a
great writing program!
