Re: Step up to writing in 1st grade
Posted by Suzi on 2/21/08

    Hi there!
6 Traits is pretty lengthy to explain but the books I learned
the MOST from where by Ruth Culham and you can find them in
Scholastic Mags. Basically there are 6 different traits-I begin
    w/ ideas,organization,word choice, fluency, voice & conventions
are taught throughout the year. We spend about a month on each
trait and you just teach that particular trait. It is nice
because when you grade writing samples a child may have horrible
conventions but wonderful ideas. It really helps target what the
strengths and weaknesses are. Ruth Culham's books have wonderful
lessons for each trait. I made a planner for each trait with
combined authors' ideas and it has been wonderful for me and my
first grade team! GOOD LUCK! :)
