As for revising content, I have had some luck by having
everyone focus on one improvement at a time. For example,
add a certain number of additional details. Go through and
circle these words: stuff, thing, nice, a lot/ lots. Now
    replace them.
As for mechanical errors, that is more difficult. If they
know spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, they
probably will use it correctly, and they will easily spot
occasional errors. If they don’t know it, they won’t see
it. The best is to teach it well up front, and practice it
continually. Another method I use is to have them begin
the same story in several different ways, and then pick the
best one. In the prewriting phase, I have them write
different kinds of figurative language that could be used in
the assignment. Then they might write a list of adjectives
or adverbs that would apply. When they write, they have
some ideas at hand. Revision is hard because many kids have
the idea that they write well the first time, and that’s a
    difficult attitude to change.
