Re: Teaching revision

Revision is an entirely different skill than editing. I find you must separate the two in order for the kids to do both. My kids do a practice edit every day. Most are gettting better at noticing problems. For revision, I have the kids read their work out loud to me or a partner. They spot much more when they hear what they have written. I also have a check list I use where their partner must answer: What is the best part of the piece?; I'd like to know more about....;I'm confused about.....; . Another thing to try when they are too busy telling their friends how wonderful the work is, pick their partners for them. I also tell all my kids that real friend would want you to do your best and should point out errors. My favorite trick is to write something on the overhead( just wing it) then you and the kids revise your work. It allows them to see that all writers must revise. Good Luck.
