Some 'tricks of the trade" I've discovered over the years
    for revising papers.
    1. Circle words that are weak and write wc (word choice).
Students must then look up stronger words in thesaurus.
    2. A wavy line under a sentence or clause indicates that they
writing is sloppy, unclear, or awkward.
    3. A star next to sentence indicates that this idea should be
    expanded.
    4. Highlight with yellow markers the "golden words" indicating
that this is well expressed and should remain in the paper.
    5. Question marks indicate that writing is unclear or more
    information is needed.
    6. A really helpful strategy for revision is for the teacher to
tape a spelling test size paper on the right side of the
student's work. The spelling test sized paper should be as long
as the student's paper but not as wide. On the spelling sized
paper the teacher can make suggestions, indicate spelling,
punctuation, capitalization, grammar errors and any additional
directions/help that the student needs to improve his or her
paper. The student can then take revision ideas written on the
paper on the right side and apply it to their writing--so that
the student is more active in revising their work as each
student must using editing marks to actively revise their own paper.
