Re: Writing with voice

I too found this trait hardest to teach. However, the most
successful assignment was called my special hideaway. We spent a
lot of time talking about where we each go and what we do when we
need our own space, or when we feel overwhelmed. I modeled this
and wrote my own for them, step by step. I really put my heart
into this, and talked a lot with my class about when I feel
certain ways and what helps me 'get it together' and so on. The
papers they wrote for this assignment, overall, were very good.
Only a few children did not really rise to the challenge and reveal
themselves fully in their writing. But they are kids with heavy
burdens, so in a way I'm not surprised. I was also pleased,
because I felt that it said the kids felt safe and secure in our
class to reveal a very private moment to others.
It takes a lot of time and modeling and discussion, but it can
happen. I too think that writers develop voice and it can be a
long process. Even writers who 'have it' don't have it all the
time.
At a workshop, the presenter also said it can't really be 'taught'
in a formulaic way. Word choice and sentence fluency and other
traits work together to create that sense of the writer behind the
words.
