Re: diagraming sentences
Posted by Yes, I do sometimes diagram sentences in "real life." on 7/28/08
If I'm reading a dense article with very long sentences, diagramming
can help me determine what the author's trying to say. (It's as useful
for teaching reading as it is for teaching writing.)
Beyond that, some school assignments are less about what we do in "real
life" than they are about teaching the students to use their minds.
Diagramming sentences helps kids understand the relationships between
different sentence elements. Diagramming ill-constructed sentences
helps students understand why certain errors are errors. Kids love to
draw, too, and diagramming is simply more fun than many other
sentence-building activities. More efficient, too, because the
students are using both sides of their brains when they diagram, and
because it's always more efficient to give them assignments that
they'll actually complete. I've never heard of Jeff Anderson, but give
us an example. How does he go about explaining the purpose of a
preposition?
