I've never diagrammed a sentence in my life. In my case, it has
certainly been irrelevant to learning how to write. But it's in our
coursebook, so I am going to have to teach it. Along with lists of
vocabulary out of context. I don't have any choice in the matter.
Maybe one day I shall be in charge of policy-making, but not yet. So
for me, and probably for rather a lot of others, the relevance of
diagramming is irrelevant.
I am grateful for the book suggestions people have posted in response
to the original poster's request!
