As far as getting hired, it's like winning the lottery. Applicants
apply annually and have various teaching backgrounds. Experience
seems to be a plus for DoDEA. As far as the difference between having
a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree, really isn't a big concern,
however a Master's seems to be the preferred. As with most districts
across the nation, Master degrees are expected as the norm. Bachelor's
are not enough, all because of NCLB and the definition of highly
qualified teachers. I have friends who currently work for DoDEA and
it took them between 7 to 10 years to be hired. I have a BA in
secondary ed with a concentration in English, Philosophy, and
psychology, and a BA in elementary grades PK-6. I also have a
Master's degree in Sped. Ed. but have not been interviewed nor
contacted by DoDEA. I have 10years teaching experience and great
recommendations, but have not been called. We are all competing with
60,000+ applicants annually. With the down sizing of the military,
especially overseas the likelihood of being picked up lessens for us
all. We sit and wait for that one phone call from a principal or
HR. Apply and wait, but don't forget to get experience. And don't
ever break a contract with your district (if under contract) this is
frowned upon by DoDEA. They do ask your boss if you would be allowed
to be let go.
Totally up to you! Good luck in any decision you decide upon.
