We have found a place to rent and with all the fees and deposits we need to pay about $18,000. I understand that we can request a three month advance in salary to pay for this, but are we ultimately reimbursed for these fees or is it all out of pocket for us?

haha Now that you say that, it does seem high. Even in Japan when we were here with an int'l school and are rent was $2500 per month our move in costs were only $12,500 (e.g. 1st, last, security, realtor fees, key money).

In Germany and in Japan this time around our move in costs were less than that.

Insight H. That is unbelievable. So in Japan its common to have all those fees: key money, last, first and security deposit..... I had heard to bring at least 6 but that's more than double

haha No, it's not that bad. The $12500 was when we here before without DoDDS. It was a brand new house and the landlord had never rented to non-Japanese before.
