EA Math Component 1

I am brand new at this. I teach middle school math. I need something more than the 5 sample questions to study. Can someone direct me to more sample items? Several sample questions are above 8th grade (which is not early adolescence btw), so, I need something concrete to refresh higher math. Thank you for anyone willing to help!!

It sounds like you've looked at the samples given in the Component 1 document. Those are all the NB provides and I'm not aware of anywhere else to look for samples. Math candidates I've worked with have studied by using some AP math problems and the Praxis exam.

How do you know what to study? Well, you don't exactly. What you have to do is to look at the TYPES of problems they say will be on the exam and then explore how those might look within all the ages (grade levels) contained in your certificate area. For example, in the constructed response section, the problems will represent Algebra and Functions, Geometry, and Data Analysis and Statistics. In math, the emphasis is much more on content (solving math problems) than on pedagogy, although the Selected Response questions may include some pedagogy.

You have to be resourceful. You have to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses and review things you don't teach or haven't taught for a long time.

One of the best things you can do, in the spring, is to practice the samples they give you by setting a timer of 30 minutes. Do these multiple times and do this too with other practice problems you find.

Maybe a math person will also respond and share how they prepared. But what I've posted has helped many a math candidate succeed.

BTW - there is a book available that gives more detailed guidance with Components 1 and 2 (any certificate area). It's called WHAT WORKS! You might find something like that helpful. Disclaimer: I'm the author.

If you're doing the EA Math certificate, then I believe that 8th grade will be the highest grade represented. You know that the NB goes by AGE rather than grade level. You may need to look at curriculum for grades below (or maybe above) what you teach.

Been there, done that Years ago I had the same question. I figured everything that could be taught (and hopefully learned) by kids from about 4th grade through 8th (Algebra 1) would be fair game.
