Seeking Advice

Hi there, In the 14-15 cycle, I scored a 2.7 on Component One and a 2.0 on Component Two. Disenchanted, I took last year off, but I'm ready to start again. I will do Components Three and Four this year, but my question - do you think I should redo Component Two? $475 is a lot of money that might not need to spent, but I also want this to be done this year, and don't want to go into the 17-18 school year.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm sorry you've had this experience. It's been hard to know what scores are "good enough" because of the way the new components have been released over time. We still don't really know, but answers are getting closer. Once Component 4 is scored THIS CYCLE, the cut score etc. will be calculated and candidates (and CSPs) won't be in the dark anymore.

My response to your question is based on my BEST GUESS of what will likely be the scoring scenario. Based on past experiences, scores near or above 2.75 are likely to be "safe" - meaning they will earn you then points needed to certify.

Component 1 is weighted fairly heavily, so I'm guessing that your 2.7 will be "good enough". It's hard to know, yet about the Component 2 score. IF you do well on Components 3 and 4, you might not need to redo it. However, it just can't be known until you get your scores for 3 and 4. It's an unknown that can't be predicted.

Component 3 is very important. It' weighted the most because with 2 videos, it's almost like a "double" entry. I guess the best advice I can give is to work like crazy this year and hope for the best.

IF you end up needing to do a component a second time, it will be disappointing, but honestly, when you do something a 2nd time, you're a lot smarter about it than you were the first time around. It may not be fun, but it's usually not as hard.

Concentrate this year on giving it your all...then all that's left to do is wait.

Sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, but this is exactly what I'd advise a candidate of my won.

About the books: The WHAT WORKS! book for Components 1 and 2 is available now. I just sent the manuscript for Components 3 and 4 to the publisher. I don't have a date for that one yet, but I hope it will be available about the same time the final version of Component 4 comes out - November-ish. Thanks for asking!
