Re: Parent Surveys

I used a parent survey to first collect ideas from my
parents on what they needed help with on educating their
child. Then I sent out another parent survey letting them
vote on the topic for a parent workshop I held based on the
first results I received.
My topic was on "Writing with my Child" and the parent who
had requested this said, "You did this for ME?" Everyone
who came filled out a simple questionaire I constructed to
fit in with entry 4's family connection impacting students.
It was so successful that I will utilize that process again
this year, hopefully one for each 9 weeks. I offered
gradebook bonus points for parental attendance.
I also posed a question each week for parents on the
homeworksheet. It might say... Ms. Jade's homework is
too... or How did you work with flashcards this week?... or
What is the best aspect of our behavior plan? These always
gave me insight into how the parents were thinking, what
they needed, and how in turn I could either use their
expertise, learn from them, or meet their needs/wants.
Of course, all of this would have to be tweaked for high
school. I think entry 4 is pretty clear that teachers are
to learn from and with the parents. This is one way I
showed that I valued my parents.
It would be neat for you to let your parents sign up to
participate in demonstration lessons throughout the year.
It would also be kewl if you showed your parents how science
is connected to our everyday lives, thus keeping them as
your ally for having high expectations for their children
with homework completion, class attendance, positive
participation, and high test-taking effort, etc.
One topic that I see that you could offer to your parents
is "Study Skills". Make sure you present research based
ideas to your parents if you do this. Also, make sure you
include tips for your lowest as well as your highest
stuents, whether they attend or not. Connect with the local
college science professors and invite them in to help with
your presentation. I'm sure they can site the study
weaknesses with their entry-level science students. A nice
field trip would be to attend a class on the college
campus! All of this would be done to positively impact
student attitude and learning.
Read entry 4 to see what your plans might entail. I'm glad
you are thinking on this so early in the game. Hats off to
you.
