If you’re fighting fast-track teacher certification
offered by the American Board for the Certification of
Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), be sure to check out a new
study that makes a strong case for the NEA-supported
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
and National Board Certification. The study, by the highly
respected National Research Council (NRC) of the National
Academies, is entitled Assessing Accomplished Teaching:
Advanced-Level Certification Programs.
This in-depth study confirms the National Board’s positive
impact on student achievement, teacher retention, and
professional development. The study found students taught
by National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) make higher
gains on achievement tests than those taught by teachers
who have not applied and those who did not achieve
certification. The press release from The National
Academies includes a link to the full report.
