Post: Master's plus 30 and Ph.D
Posted by AL on 6/26/08
I'm about at the end of Master's program. I wanted to get
a Ph.D or Master's plus 30 but I've been kind of afraid
because I heard horror stories about people who get those
degrees sometimes have trouble getting jobs because:
1. It's more expensive to hire them; it's cheaper to hire
someone with just a Master's that can do the same job more
than sufficiently.
2. A lot of job opportunities that come with getting a
Ph.D can also come with just a Master's, except being a
college professor (but then again, it seems like 80% of
the professors that I had, all had Master's degrees
I've heard a whole host of things like this. So, I'm just
wondering before I decide. I mean hey, if getting a
Master's plus 30 or Ph.D = more trouble than it's worth,
then I'll just keep just a Master's. But I just was
thinking about getting one just to have one, and I could
be the first in my family to have a Ph.D or so.
Thanks,
Al
