    Re: Master's plus 30 and Ph.D
    Posted by KH on 6/26/08

    Hi Al,
I went ABD (all but dissertation) on a PhD in Pol. Science
when I entered teaching. At the time, I had an MA + 60
credit hours. This put me at the top of the pay scale as a
1st year public school teacher, and I had no trouble finding
a job. Districts in my state count positions as "points",
full time being 1 point. A point is a point to the school,
they aren't under pressure to hire people with less
education to keep costs down. One thing to keep in mind is
that PhD's in education are viewed differently in the
academic (higher ed) world, and you will have a hard time
finding a tenure track position at a university (if that's
your goal) than you would if you had the degree in a content
area like biology, english, mathematics, etc.
All this said, I think there's something to be said for
being the 1st in your family to have a PhD. I was the 1st in
mine to go to college, and I think it had a great impact on
    my own childrens academic careers.
Also, the term "Professor" denotes someone with a PhD. What
    you had were "Instructors".
