Post: Gifted Children and NCLB

All of my children have been in the GATE program in our
District for many years. The first few years, our GATE
program was a pull-out program three times a year where
our students were bused to the District Office for one
week enrichment classe. My children still use the skills
that they learned in 3rd grade in the GATE program. Due to
funding, the pull out program was abandoned. Now,the GATE
students are clustered at each grade level. When the GATE
student population in each grade is not sufficient
to "fill" a classroom, oftentimes the principal and
teacher assign students who are good independent workers
but test in the "proficient" level or "basic" level to
that same classroom with the GATE students. As a parent of
GATE children, I feel that mixing a classroom with these
two type of students is an excellent decision because it
offers many and varied opportunities for students to be
good examples, mentors and tutors.
