Someone said, "We need Doctors, Lawyers, and Indian Chiefs. But we desparately need Butchers, Bakers, and Candlestick Makers." I'm one of the older posters and remember when our school schedule had a break about the time of Thanksgiving to allow the farm kids to help gather the crop. NCLB pretends that all kids are exactly equal and all need the exact same education. IT'S WRONG!!! We had students that were the kids of the owners of very large farms. The math they needed was how many bushels of corn made a wagon load or how much cotton by volumn made a 500lb. bale. They didn't need Shakespear or Advanced Algebra. The kids that did, didn't need to know how a diesel engin worked or how much 13-13-13 was needed on a crop in July. When we started ignoring those facts of life and started pretending that the kids that could barely say his name was going to score the same as the son of the NASA person, we just stopped educating for the public good and started playing politics..... .

frustrated It soooo depends on the class. Last year 93% of my kids were proficient or advanced in math on the state test. This year uh.. different story. I too feel like I am speaking in a foreign language to some of them. They brought no skills with them from the previous grade. So yeah its almost like the powers that be were like "hey she's good at teaching...See More

libteacher I totally agree! I too have notice the same development in my school. The lay-off of the good and “caring” teachers who dared to do the correct thing the students needed. I am now left alone with the 7 students with severe disabilities, mental retardation and and I am deeply troubled and over-whelmed by the responsibilities without any ...See More
