The nice thing about AR is that it can be as flexible as you
want it to be. The thing I see is the excitement of the
students when they get a perfect score and want to take that
home to their parents. However, with 8th graders, it may be
more difficult. The tricky part with 8th graders is that the
program won't really generate excitment in my mind unless you
tie in grades or rewards and there are mixed opinions about
that. If students are reading for a grade, are they more
concentrated on the book or the fact of finishing it until
the goal is reached?
STAR is an assessment program that can help you gauge how
your students are doing compared to other students around the
nation. It also gives them a reading range to tie to AR so
they can look at books that may fit their reading level the
best. To me, they both go hand in hand. With RTI, STAR
seems to fit that mold well for both STAR Math and STAR
Reading.
