Re: Please help me understand the AR levels
Posted by: It may be different in your school on 9/11/09

Well...it may be different. In my school, the AR books are
arranged by grade level by "powers"...a "Five to the first
power" (also called a "Five One") is for the first half of
fifth grade. A "Five to the second power" (called a "Five
Two") is meant for a child in the second half of fifth grade
So in other words, the AR level is a RANGE...not an exact
reading level like a GaitesMacGinitie test. Kids who are
below-level readers can choose a book that is an entire grade
    level below their actual grade.
This may be different in your school, though. I also know
that two years ago, the levels of some books went down,
according to Renaissance Learning. We had over 30 titles that
were supposed to be 6th grade level that ended-up being 4th
and 5th grade level. We had to change all of the codes in the
books and re-shelf them in a different location.
    I hope this helps.
