give the STAR test to determine reading levels. This test is
also a product of the AR company "Renaissance Learning". The
reading level is given in a range. For example a 5th grader
may be reading on a 4.7-5.6, or something similar. It is based
on the fact that a beginning fifth grader would be at a 5.0
level. Of course, fifth graders can be much lower or much
higher so that is why the test is given. It's not unusual for
a 5th grader to be successful at a 7th grade level, or
struggling at a 3rd grade level. AR is designed for students
to progress on an INDIVIDUAL level. Not necessarily at their
grade level. I think 80% or about that, is considered reading
on the correct level (I may be wrong on that one.) If the
school year is just beginning, then the teacher may not have
had time for testing. If you haven't gotten any feedback
about reading levels or the STAR test within a reasonable
time, you may wish to schedule a conference with the teacher
to see what level is right for your child.
