I always point out that AR is only a small part of a complete
reading program. It is ONLY for basic independent reading
comprehension in most cases. When we read a book as a class, we
also include literacy skills quizzes and vocabulary quizzes, which
test deeper than basic comprehension. Parents often try to argue
that AR is THE reading program. It is not. It was never designed
to be that, and if a school is using is as such, they are wrong.
I also point out that students are free to read anything they
want. The program has a great deal of flexibility. Any good
teacher will not refuse to let a child read a book just because it
is an AR book. I am a certified trainer for AR, yet I still know
that AR is not the end-all be-all in reading instruction. It
needs to be an independent program. Sometimes I have students who
don't even participate in the AR program. One of my students
refuses to take an AR test. He reads all the time. He will not
test. I have other arrangements for his assessment.
