Post: Multi-sensory word decoding
Posted by Anita on 9/09/05
Hi,
I have been posting on the sped teachers chatboard. I
teach elem sped, and most of my students have literacy
issues.
I just found out that I will be presenting a session about
my decoding strategy at the NAACE conference in November.
In 1979, an adult who had never been successful with
reading showed me how she needed me to teach her to decode
and read. So, together we developed an inexpensive,
concrete, and multi-sensory decoding method. As I helped
additional students improve in reading, I developed a book
to teach the method. HEARING, SAYING, WRITING, SEEING, AND
READING THE SOUNDS OF WORDS teaches students to move from
the written spelling of words to discover the "sound
spelling." Decoding using the vowel-consonant patterns and
sounds for the most frequently used "sight words" are
demonstrated.
I hope I will meet some of you in Pittsburg in November!
