I did NOT enjoy being a HS English Teacher but I did find the literacy
program for 9th graders interesting. I volunteered at Literacy Partners
to explore teaching adult literacy and liked it right off.
They'll prepare you to teach in their evening program -- 2 nights a week
with a partner teacher for a year. You'll start learning to teach ABE:
Adult Basic Education which is literacy and numeracy for English-speaking
adults who are reading at a 0-6 grade level. After about a year and a
half, I started volunteering anywhere else I could to get more experience.
I studied the GED and how to teach it and I started volunteering to teach
Pre-GED and GED. Then I started getting PT jobs teaching ABE and Pre-GED
and, eventually, GED.
Any higher education, any certification will help you. Look into the Adult
Ed program at Hunter College.
