I don't know much about Jonathan Kozol. I caught part of an
interview on the Morning Show on NBC where he talked about his
book The Shame of The Nation. In this interview he states that
one of the differences between the inner city schools and the
surburbs is the the inner city teaches students in order for them
to pass the state mandated tests. He said the surburbs don't do
that because they assume the students will automatically pass. I
think that Mr. Kozol needs to research this subject more. I live
in the "surburbs", I can tell you one thing...Our school board
teaches with the sole purpose of passing the state testing. In
the Middle School they have even gone so far as to take away
elective classes and give them a GEPA prep course. (GEPA is 8th
grade state test in NJ) They start these prep courses in the 6th
grade. I say if they got teachers to teach they way they are
supposed to and start in the earlier grades we wouldn't have to go
to this extreme.
Teaching for state tests is done no matter where you live and it
should stop. Go back and start teaching the basics the right way
and all will fall into place.
