We had a very similar problem last year. In our case my
daughter was transferring in from a small rural school the the
district was not used to working with.
We made an appointment with the Junior High counselor. We
brought with us her paperwork where she had been tested. The
counselor sent us to talk to the two different math teachers.
The 7th grade math teacher sat down with her for about ten
minutes and they went through the book very quickly. The end
result was she didn't want my daughter in her class, she said
she would be bored. We were then sent to the next higher math
teacher who after talking with her agreed that it would be a
better fit.
You might have better luck at the Junior high level then with
the 6th grade teacher.
