You need about 20% free space for virtual memory to run, so on
an 40GB drive you should always leave 8GB free, 16GB on
an 80GB drive, 24GB on a 120GB drive.
Have you recently run Disk Utlity, Disk First aid, repair
permissions, and verify disk?
I you can boot the troublesome machine into target mode (hold
down T at startup) and have a Firewire cable to connect the
two macs together you can use the other ones DU DFA to repair
the drive if it's slightly damaged.
