Re: Teaching Shortage Crock!!!
Posted by ACP on 8/17/07

There is a bit of truth in everything said in these posts.
But there are also a few sour grapes and half-truths. I went
the ACP route and got offered a math position right out of
school. I started at $39K. This year I will make a little over
$42K due to salary increases for whatever reasons. I think I
work in a good district although our schools are getting
rougher due to urban sprawl and migration from the poorer
    areas - fact of life.

I would like to hear more about your experience. I agree with
the poster that said you are probably limiting yourself to a
particular geographic area. I have seen this millions of
times in all walks of life. People grow up in small rural
communities and then expect to find their dream job and stay
in that community all of their lives. It just isn't going to
happen in most cases and particularly in teaching. Those
teachers who work in those schools do not leave very often.
This is even true in the premo districts in the bigger cities.

There is a teacher shortage in the tough schools and tough
districts. Go anywhere along the U.S. / Mexico border and you
will have much better luck finding a position. Go to the
growing areas. We now have 9 high schools in our district,
opening 2 more next year, and will be building 2 more in the
next 2 years in addition to 13 other elementary and middle
schools. These will produce a need for a good number of
teachers. Be aware that if you come here you will not get a
position in a brand new school in the better parts of the
district. You will have to work at the tougher schools
vacated by the experienced teachers who go to the new schools.
But you can find a job.

I grew up in a small town. The day I graduated high school I
left for the service and haven't lived back in that town
since. Every time I go back there I hear my family members
complain about how there is no opportunity in the area and
they can't make any money. I cannot figure out why they won't
move somewhere else. I went to where the jobs were, retired
from an IT position, and now teach. I had no problem getting
a teaching job. And contrary to what one poster said about
hiring alternative teachers, I think those of us who come from
other walks of life and with lots of life experiences make
some good teachers. Not always, a number do not understand
the rigors of the classroom but I also know of some darn good
alternative route teachers who can put real life information
    into the classroom.

Anyway, if you want a teaching position, get up and move to
where the teaching positions are at. I know Wyoming now
starts teachers out at $40K and from what I understand they
need teachers. I know the Southern border towns do as do other
cities with increasing Hispanic populations - Houston, Dallas,
Albuquerque, Souther California, etc. You will also find
better opportunities in inner city districts - Baltimore,
    D.C., NYC, Chicago.

Those who find jobs will say it is easy, those who don't will
tell you it is a conspiracy.
